After my A-levels I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do believe it or not. I took English language, history and sociology. My sixth form tutors drummed it into us that we had to apply to university so I did, a BA in Business Management... I soon withdrew my application due to the realisation that studying for a degree that I had no interest in and was only doing so on the say so of tutors was a silly thing to do! I took a two year break from education, in this time I worked as a medical secretary and the Crown Prosecution Service. The CPS was when my career focus of becoming a solicitor kicked in. I then applied for university to study my law degree at the University of Sunderland. During my degree I worked as a paralegal at a high street firm in Sunderland in the criminal and prison department which I loved! I did everything from prison visits, to crown court and magistrates attendance, to pre trial conferences with counsel, drafting witness statements, legal aid applications, you name it, I did it! I owe a lot to that firm for the beginning of my career! I also worked in other departments in that firm from family to conveyancing. I can honestly say my confidence absolutely rocketed in the legal field from the 2.5 years I worked there. This was also down to the fact I worked with and met some amazing people I will forever be grateful for. Third year kicked in and I needed to get my head down even more so than second year so I slowed down work at the law firm and concentrated on working at the witness service which I did from the start of my degree. This was also a very rewarding role as as an accredited witness support where I met people from all walks of life. This role entailed going through court procedure with witnesses, pre trial visits, onward referrals etc. I also did mini pupillage due to having a friend who is a barrister and he has always been a great help to me during my degree. I did this due to not knowing if I wanted to do the Bar or the LPC. Continued in comments... littlelawyerldn (@littlelawyerldn) posted on Instagram September 10, 2019 11:40
